[ratemypost]If you have spent any time waiting in line to check out at the grocery store, I probably don’t have to tell you that we currently live in a celebrity obsessed culture.
The magazine racks are stuffed with periodicals featuring covers that scream DIVORCE SCANDAL and LOOK WHO GOT CAUGHT CHEATING. It seems like the love lives of celebrities are in a constant state of turmoil, and we the general public eat it up and beg for more.
What’s that all about? Why do we have such a strong desire to constantly be in the know about the romances of people we don’t even know?
I have a theory that the complete disasters that are generally celebrity relationship make us all feel better about our own relationships.
Let’s be honest, sometimes the status of our love lives isn’t exactly what we’d like it to be.
Whether you’re single and you’d rather not be, or you’re feeling stuck in a relationship with the wrong person, your struggles are nothing compared to the messes most celebrities find themselves in.
Take, for instance, Kim Kardashian…Who (not to be upstaged by actual royalty – Prince William and Kate) held an insanely extravagant, over-the-top wedding to basketball player Kris Humphries.
Only to file for divorce a mere 72 days later. I can only think of one other celebrity marriage that was shorter (though I’m sure others are out there). Remember Britney Spears tying the knot in Vegas and then changing her mind within hours? What a mess!
Of course, you can’t really discuss celebrity relationships without talking about the cheating scandals that are constantly popping up in tabloid news. Just about every celebrity couple faces a cheating rumor or two.
Even the President isn’t immune to it… Famously, John F. Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe had quite a public love affair while Jackie was left to (presumably) fume in the White House.
Bill Clinton didn’t bother to find a Hollywood starlet, finding himself a White House intern instead.
So…Are there any successful celebrity relationships? After all, even Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston’s marriage couldn’t survive the lure of Angelina Jolie.
There are a few rare celebrity couples that have managed to stand the test of time, though. Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn have been together for over 30 years now, as have Ozzy and Sharon Osborne.
Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson married in 1988 and are still going strong…And Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick are celebrating 18 years together in 2015.
Another couple that comes to mind, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, married in 2005 and still appear to be very much in love. It remains to be seen if they will join the short list of long-term celebrity couples, but as of now it looks good for them.
Why is it that most celebrity love lives seem doomed while a select few manage to flourish? Perhaps it has to do with how much of their lives are shared with the public.
After all, I can imagine it would be incredibly hard to maintain a healthy relationship while under constant scrutiny from practically every living being.
One thing the successful couples seem to have in common is that they share very little about their private lives with the public… They actually appear to value intimacy with their partners over press.
What can we, the humble general public learn from all of this? Well…While we don’t typically have photographers following us everywhere (well, I don’t, anyway. I don’t know about you.), documenting our every move, we do have more opportunities to share our private lives these days. With
Facebook, Twitter, and social media in general, it’s tempting and alarmingly easy to over-share every aspect of our lives.
Maybe we should all agree that sharing the occasional cute couple photo is ok, but keeping the most intimate details of our relationships private is the way to go.
By doing this, we can potentially avoid the heartache and drama that befalls most celebrity love stories.
